What are the pedals on the piano for?

The pedal on the right is used to sustain a note that you play. The pedal in the middle sustains only the notes that are pressed at the same time as the pedal. The pedal on the left is used to soften the note played.

I have a piano with three pedals. (Upright piano)
I believe the three pedals help constrant the sounds while playing pieces. When playing, I sometimes step on the left pedal to soften the tone to what I am playing. Also, I have stepped on the right pedal (nearest right) to make the sound louder and stronger when playing. I'm not quite sure what the middle pedal does, but I hope that helps you.  Smiley
