If there is a rest on the second and third beat in a bar, why is it that composers don't join them together into a half rest rather than keeping them both quarter rests?

Hey ChrisK,

I've been told that you have to show the third beat in 4/4 time. For some reason, it's important to do that. Are you a composer? I've tried writing a bit and I also find rests kind of confusing.

If you have a long rests in a song ( like 16 bars), what's an efficient way to count them and keep track with where you are?

if you are having trouble keeping count you can sometimes look for passages that sound familiar before the place where you start. Or you can ask your music teacher to say out what passage they are on or call out you instrument when they get to that bar.
